"Follow me?"

I was watching a pair of Cedar Waxwings when this Virginia Rail sauntered out of the grass onto the gravel trail and stood right in front of me just when the rising sun lit that part of the wetland. I froze on the spot, not sure if I would spook it by just lifting the camera. The Rail looked me in the eye for a couple of seconds and started walking. I slowly followed and to my surprise this usually elusive and skittish bird just kept walking at a leisurely pace out in the open. Finally it crossed another trail, gave me one last glance, and disappeared in the grass on the other side. How cool is that?! I guess it really pays to be an "early bird", as you get the elusive bird, and the gorgeous but fleeting morning golden light.
